Other Netherlands Gardens
While there are hundreds of gardens in the Netherlands and I have wrote about a few of the more prominent ones I visited in previous posts here I am just going to summarize a few of the remaining ones we visited where the garden were only a part of what was offered.
Kasteel de Haar- de Haar Castle near Utrecht
A Medieval Style Castle with towers, turrets, moats, gates and suspension bridges right out of fairy tales – rebuilt and refurbished in in late 19th century by the baron after marrying into the Rothchild family. I found it reminiscent of Hearst’s San Simeon Castle.
Along with the castle they refurbished 135 acres of park land most in the English Country style with winding paths, fine vistas of the castle in the distance, bridges and beautiful, impressive trees. The gardens closer to the castle were more formal.
The the French Geometric style boxwood parterre was a sharp contrast of green and white almost Versailles-like. There wre also some form Rose gardens barley in leaf in early May and they had some Romanesque garden of topiaries and lawns.
Arnhem Openair Museum
A “museum” that has almost a hundred different vignettes in to the Netherlands history. Buildings from all over the country were transported and are display. Wandering around from mid 17th century Amsterdam and turning the corner and you are in mid 20th century Friesland.
From a garden perspective there were sample parterre filled with tulips in amongst the windmills and a formal herb/medical garden.
For such a small country there are many gardens all over. If you head to the Netherlands and want to find some gardens to visit be sure to check :
